FB to start charging to share links?

💰 Facebook to massively increase creator payouts like never before

If you've been following us, you already know that Facebook has been sending new invites to the Creator Monetization program at an insane clip. You would also know that the program is still in Beta and is going to be coming out of Beta soon.

What many publishers fear is that this will massively reduce RPMs, earnings and payouts for pages that are already in the program.

WRONG! Not only is Facebook going to make the program massively available, you can expect the payouts to increase at the same time.

Just look at Facebook's competitors - YouTube pays 55% of its ad revenue to creators. X is raising it's payouts to be more competitive with YouTube's. And Facebook? Well, they pay out a tiny fraction of what these other players pay (and we all still make tens of thousands if not hundreds of thousands of dollars a month anyway). They have A LOT of room to play with, and play they will.

Even if Facebook doubles or triples creator payouts, it wouldn’t meaningfully impact Facebook's margins in any meaningful way. In fact, it would create a huge influx of new publishers seeking the next online gold rush. And we'll be there providing them with the picks and shovels.

🤮 Facebook wants you to pay to be able to share links???

Facebook has been testing a new paywall move: limit how many links you can share unless you cough up £9.99 a month. Some users are being told they’ll only be allowed two link posts per month unless they subscribe. Facebook says it’s just a “limited test” - and limited it shall stay.

We’ve seen it already with X. Throttle links, monetize reach, then quietly reverse course once the platform starts eating itself. Our prediction hasn’t changed: Facebook will bring link priority back, loosen the clamps, and once again let publishers send traffic at scale.

🎫 Influencer reach is now a visa credential. Yes, really.

US “extraordinary ability” visas, traditionally reserved for artists, athletes, and academics, are increasingly going to influencers and OnlyFans creators. Immigration lawyers say online reach, audience size, and monetization are now core evidence in visa applications. Followers are effectively becoming paperwork.

This makes Facebook’s monetization push quite interesting. A Page with documented reach, consistent earnings, and a growing audience now looks a lot more like a legitimate media business. No bold claims here, just an observation. But when governments start recognizing digital reach as legitimate professional capital, it changes how seriously this work gets taken.

💥 Google’s December kicks major publishers where it hurts most

A lot of big news publishers got clipped, Search and Discover, and not in a “one bad day” way. Forums moved, AI-optimized listicles didn’t magically win, spam actually increased in some cases, and even large publisher networks felt real volatility. This update touched way more surfaces than Google usually admits.

What’s interesting is we’ve seen this exact pattern before. In past core updates, major news sites dropped hard during rollout… then recovered weeks later once the update fully settled. That may happen again. Or not. Either way, this is useful context heading into your first posts of the year. If your Search or Discover traffic feels unstable right now, you’re not alone.

#️⃣ IG’s Mosseri says “creators will continue to matter”

Instagram chief Adam Mosseri basically said the obvious thing: AI is about to copy everything. Style, polish, even “raw” content. So IG’s response isn’t to fight AI but to verify what’s real. They plan to highlight original creators, show more clearly who’s behind each account, and give authenticity a heavier weight in the system.

On Facebook, reach is nice but credibility is about to matter more. Clear identity, consistent voice. Opinions that sound like they came from a person, not a prompt. The irony is AI is forcing platforms back to basics. And that’s good news for publishers and brands who actually say something real and build relationships over time.
