AI Platforms Are Pulling Billions of Users. Most of What They Surface Is Junk.
The chart above shows what is actually happening with ChatGPT usage. It is not slowing down. It is accelerating into territory that should change how every publisher thinks about distribution.
ChatGPT broke its monthly-active-user record for the fourth consecutive month in August, reaching 1.06 billion MAUs, according to Similarweb. It processes roughly 2.5 billion queries per day. Google AI Overviews now reaches over 2.5 billion users monthly. Perplexity is growing over 200 percent year over year. Gemini web traffic grew roughly nine times in eighteen months. These are not experimental toys anymore. They are mass-scale information platforms, and they are where a growing share of the public now goes for answers.
Here is the part that matters for publishers: the quality of what these platforms surface is still remarkably poor. A Tow Center study found that AI search engines failed to return correct information more than 60 percent of the time across 1,600 test queries. They fabricate links, cite syndicated copies instead of originals, and pull from low-authority sources because that is what is available to them. The bar is on the floor.
That is the opportunity. The platforms are desperate for quality content to cite, and right now most of what fills the gap is mediocre. If you run a real publishing operation with original reporting, editorial judgment, and well-structured content, you are exactly what these systems need. Here is what the data says about positioning yourself inside them:
1. Editorial content consistently outperforms commercial pages in AI citations. These systems show a clear preference for informational content over transactional pages. If your site publishes real editorial work, you already have an advantage over most of what is being cited right now. |
2. AI visitors who do click through convert 42 percent better than non-AI traffic. The sessions are fewer, but the intent behind them is sharper. This is not junk traffic. |
3. Zero-click searches now account for 60 percent of all Google queries. AI Overviews correlate with a 58 percent lower click-through rate on the top organic result. The old playbook of ranking on page one and waiting for clicks is eroding fast. |
4. AI referral traffic is growing 165 times faster than organic search traffic. Brands investing in generative engine optimization are reporting 30 to 40 percent higher AI referral traffic compared to traditional SEO-only strategies. |
The bottom line is pretty simple. Billions of people are using these platforms daily, and the platforms are pulling from whatever content they can find. Much of it is garbage. If you have spent years building legitimate publishing assets and real websites, those should be the sources AI platforms lean on. They are not going to come find you, though. You need to be structured, visible, and positioned where these systems can actually reach your content. The publishers who figure that out now will own a distribution channel that most of the industry is still ignoring.

THE GEO AUTHORITY SYSTEM
AI is choosing its sources right now. Make sure you are one of them.
The analysis above lays it out: billions of queries a day, and most of what AI surfaces is low-quality content. The GEO Authority System is a structured audit of how AI engines see your content today, plus the 90-day plan to become the source they cite in your category.
