In today’s issue: Chartbeat’s new numbers on search, why the share matters less than your own count, where Facebook fits, and how to spread your traffic risk. |
Social now sends publishers more traffic than search. Here's how to grab your share.
The chart above is Chartbeat’s new Q3 2026 picture for North American publishers, and it comes with a second line that matters just as much: overall traffic across its network has stayed steady. Readers are still showing up. More of them are arriving through doors other than search. Four stories, each with one move for this week.

Search lost ground, and most of it went early |
Chartbeat’s Q3 2026 global audience insights, published Oct 15, put search at 12% of North American publisher pageviews, against 21% in its Q3 2025 report. Most of that slide happened earlier. The quarter itself barely moved, from 13% in Q2 to 12%, and Chartbeat says search traffic fell or held flat in every region this quarter.
Look across a full year and search share fell in nine of the ten regions Chartbeat tracks. Africa was the exception, rising from 41% to 46%. Chartbeat’s earlier reports linked the decline to AI’s growing role in search, according to Search Engine Journal. This quarter’s report does not give a cause.

DO THIS →
Take your 10 best evergreen search articles and turn each into a Facebook link post with a fresh hook image and a new first line. Space them through the month so the pieces Google already proved keep earning from your page.

Check the count before you worry about the share |
Here is the catch Search Engine Journal points out. A share can drop for three reasons: search sent fewer pageviews, another source sent more, or both happened at once. A falling percentage on its own does not tell you which.
Chartbeat also does not say how many sites are in each report, or whether the same sites appear year to year. So treat Chartbeat’s figure as a benchmark for your mix, then go to your own numbers. If your raw search visits held while social and direct grew, that is a very different story from search visits that actually fell.
DO THIS →
Add a newsletter signup box after the second paragraph of your 20 highest-traffic search articles. Every search visitor who signs up becomes a reader you can reach again without asking Google.

Facebook is the channel most of you can actually grow |
Social was the other half of Chartbeat’s North American picture, up from 13% to 18% of pageviews over the same year. Search is hard to move on your own. On Facebook you choose what you post, how often, and in which formats, and you see the results within days.
Work across every media type: photos, links, text posts and video. Keep the formats that already earn for you, and move into video gradually so it adds to what works. A page built on one format is exposed the day that format loses reach. Facebook consulting gives your team the same playbook we use across publishers of all sizes, with more than 300 million followers under management.
DO THIS →
A/B your link placement for two weeks: alternate the link in the first comment with the link in the post, same topics and time slots. Then check link-click CTR by post type in Meta Professional Dashboard and give more slots to the format that wins.
| 04 |
Spread the risk before the next drop |
Loyal readers grew too, to 47% of North American pageviews in Chartbeat’s count. Those readers come back on their own: through your homepage, your newsletter, your pages. They are the part of your traffic no single platform can switch off.
The lesson from search is simple. Any one channel can shrink without warning. Publishers who spread their traffic across Facebook, Google, email and direct visits feel the next shift as a dip, and keep publishing. Start with the channel you have neglected, and give it a fixed slot every week.
DO THIS →
Build a second and third page in adjacent niches, and seed them with reworked versions of your main page’s best posts. If Meta restricts one page, the others keep earning while you fix it.
THE PUBLISHER IN A BOX TAKE
Search shrinking as a share of traffic is a reason to rebalance your mix. Google still matters, and Discover is still one of the strongest sources a publisher has. But the publishers holding steady are the ones with more than one engine running. Facebook is where most of you can add reach fastest, because you control the posting. Use every format, build video in step by step, and keep your loyal readers close through email and your own pages. We work with publishers of all sizes, and the steadiest of them never rely on a single channel.
DO THIS → Turn your best photo or text post of the week into one short video. Add more video only as it earns, and keep links, photos and text running.
