Google’s Oct 15 update is about one thing publishers care about: getting readers out of the AI answer and onto a site. More inline links, placed higher. News carousels expanding, with Preferred Sources highlighted. A test of clickable creator names on video results. Preferred Sources users are up more than 7x since the start of the year, with no baseline from Google. Four stories, each with one move for this week.

Google wants you to click out of the AI answer |
Google says it has made continued and substantial increases to inline links in AI Mode and AI Overviews, and is now showing those links higher up more frequently. Inline links sit inside the answer itself, on words and phrases. Google is also testing a dedicated section at the top of some responses for the one or two official pages that can finish a task, with a short note on why each link is useful. Related article links at the end of some answers are getting thumbnails and a more clickable design. Separately, creator and publisher names on AI Mode video results are being tested as clickable links into Search profiles.
None of that comes with a count for how many more links appear, or how much higher they sit. You still have to be worth citing. Original reporting and clear attribution are what earn the slot. A Google Discover audit maps how your site shows up across Google’s surfaces, including generative AI eligibility in Search Console.

DO THIS →
Search five of your core topics in AI Mode and AI Overviews. Note whether you appear as an inline link, in a carousel, or not at all.

Preferred Sources grew 7x. The carousels are catching up. |
The number of people using Preferred Sources has grown by more than 7x since the start of the year. Google did not give a starting number, and did not define what counts as “use.” At the same time, Google is rolling out its carousels for timely articles in AI Search to more locations and languages, and those carousels highlight a reader’s Preferred Sources.
Preferred Sources already works in Top Stories worldwide. For AI Mode and AI Overviews, Google’s Search Central docs say your site must be included in Search generative AI features in Search Console to be eligible there. Readers who star you are the ones Google is giving more weight. As the carousels widen, that badge travels with them.
|
DO THIS →
Confirm generative AI inclusion in Search Console, then search your domain in Google’s source preferences tool.

The button, the deeplink, and who to ask first |
Only domains and subdomains can appear in Google’s source preferences tool. A path like example.com/blog does not qualify. If your site shows up in the tool, Google gives you three ways to ask readers to add you: a standard JavaScript button (recommended), an advanced button with your own design, or a deeplink in the form https://www.google.com/preferences/source?q=yourdomain.com. Google says that deeplink works on web pages, in social posts, email newsletters and promotions.
Put the button on your article template when you can. Use the deeplink in the newsletter and on Facebook when a script will not load. Start with people who already open your mail and follow your pages. On a Discover strategy call we can pick which ask fits your audience.
|
DO THIS →
Add the Preferred Sources button to your article template, or put the deeplink in tomorrow’s newsletter and one Facebook post.

You can see the impressions. The clicks are still hidden. |
Search Console’s generative AI report shows impressions for pages that appear in AI Overviews, AI Mode and generative features in Discover. As of October 2026 it still does not break out clicks from those features on their own (reported). Google has said it will add more metrics over time, with no date given (reported).
So you can tell whether you are showing up. You cannot yet tell how many AI answer clicks you earned. Watch Discover and Search clicks next to AI impressions, and treat a rise in impressions with flat clicks as a signal worth watching. Preferred Sources and stronger inline links are moves you can make now while that gap closes. A Google Discover audit starts from your Search Console numbers and a clear plan.
|
DO THIS →
Annotate Oct 15 in Search Console, then compare AI impressions and Discover clicks for the two weeks before and after.

THE PUBLISHER IN A BOX TAKE
Despite the fear around AI answers, Discover and Google remain among the strongest traffic sources a publisher has. With the right strategy, securing and growing that traffic matters more than ever. Bet on content AI summaries cannot replace: original reporting, real photos, named sources and a clear point of view. Build loyal readers who choose you as a Preferred Source, because Google is now giving those readers more weight. We work with publishers of all sizes, with more than 300 million followers under management, and the sites that treat Google as a channel to build are the ones holding up.
DO THIS → Pick one loyal audience this week, newsletter or Facebook, and ask them to add you as a Preferred Source with a one-line link.
