AI text now carries a hidden mark. Will feeds read it?
|
|
Tomorrow, Nov 3, Anthropic will reportedly start putting an invisible watermark1 in text from four older Claude models. Its newer models already carry one. The news comes from an email to Claude Platform customers, which we have only seen described in press coverage, so treat the details as reported.
The mark is not hidden characters. Anthropic says2 it is a pattern in word choice that a detector can read and a person cannot see. It travels with copy and paste and may survive some editing, though a full rewrite should remove it. It carries no information about who wrote the prompt. For now, checking for it is limited to a private-preview tool for approved groups such as regulators, media outlets, fact-checkers and researchers.
The push comes from Europe. Article 50 of the EU AI Act3 has applied since Aug 2, with a grace period to Dec 2 for systems already on the market, and it requires AI-generated text to be marked in a machine-readable way. OpenAI said last month4 it is marking eligible ChatGPT and Codex text in the EU only. Anthropic is applying its mark everywhere because it has no durable way to limit it by region.
Neither company calls this proof. Anthropic says a missing mark does not show a person wrote something, and short text, facts and code carry less of it. OpenAI’s own figures put detection at about 80% for 200 tokens and about 95% for 400, and swapping a quarter of the words dropped it to 17%.
So what does a feed do with it? So far, no platform has said a label affects reach. YouTube says5 its AI labels do not change how a video is recommended or whether it can earn money. Meta6 shows “AI info” labels and says it may apply penalties to accounts that skip disclosure, but it has published no reach rule for labeled content.
Here is our prediction, and it is ours, not something any platform has announced. As marks like this become standard, we expect them to feed the algorithms that decide what gets pushed up. We do not expect posts without a watermark to be penalized. We expect posts that carry one to stop getting the same lift as posts that do not, because an unmarked post implies a person made it.
Our reasoning is that ranking systems already look for any cheap signal that separates original work from the flood, and a built-in mark is about as cheap as a signal gets. Platforms have spent the year tightening AI labels and disclosure rules, and a mark that rides along with the text would let them skip the guesswork.
It would be a rough signal at first. Only a few vendors mark their text, short posts carry little of it, and a light rewrite can strip it out. But if it plays out, “human-made” stops being something a publisher claims and becomes something a feed can infer, and we think reach numbers will show it before any announcement does.
