Some sites saw Search Console clicks jump 5x to 10x. Nobody can explain it yet.

Since around Oct 31, some sites have seen Google Search Console report a sudden jump in clicks. Site owners have described five times their usual clicks over a weekend, and in some cases ten times a normal day. It is not hitting every site, and it may be a bug.1
Three details stand out. Impressions stayed flat while clicks climbed, so click-through rate shot up. At least one site owner said the extra clicks did not show up as visits on the site. And on some sites the spike appears in data pulled through the Search Console API but not in the web interface.1
Nobody has confirmed the cause. One SEO analyst said the click-through patterns look like bot traffic. Another said the sites they dug into looked like AI agents or bots researching products or services. A commenter asked whether rank-tracking tools could be behind it. Google had not commented when the reports were published, and by Nov 4 some analysts said their numbers were dropping back to normal.1
It comes as Google decides what to report for AI search. On Nov 2, a member of Google’s search team said the Search Console team wants to give “data that makes sense” in the AI performance report but has nothing to announce, which industry coverage read as a sign that click and query data may not be coming. Another Googler said that was an odd way to read the comment, so the question is still open.2 Meanwhile, a monthly industry roundup reports that AI Overviews now show up on 80% of Google searches.3
Put together, two things are true at once this week. The clicks Search Console counts may include activity that never became a visit, and clicks from AI answers still can’t be seen on their own. Both point the same way: the report publishers treat as the record of how Google sends them readers is getting harder to read at face value.
For a solo page owner, Search Console is often the only window into Google traffic. A spike like this one looks like a breakout week until analytics says otherwise. And with no AI click data, a drop caused by AI Overviews looks the same in the report as a ranking loss or a slow news week. The chart moves, and the reason behind it isn’t in the chart.
For media teams, the effect spreads further. Search Console numbers feed dashboards, editorial planning and the reports that go to leadership, often through the API. This week the spike showed up through the API on some sites and not in the web interface, so two people at the same company looking at the same property could have seen different numbers. Gaps like that between reports are what a Google Discover Audit is designed to catch.
The bigger pattern is about who is clicking. If the analysts who suspect AI agents are right, software doing research on someone’s behalf can now register as a search click. Google’s AI answers, meanwhile, sit on most searches, and the report still can’t show how many readers clicked through from them. A report built to count people arriving from search is starting to count other things, while the visits it was built for get harder to pick out. Where Discover and AI answers meet is the ground a Google Discover & AI Search Strategy Call covers.
Keep the limits in view. The cause is unconfirmed, it did not hit every site, some analysts say numbers were back to normal by Nov 4, and Google may explain or fix it. Either way, it shows how much of a publisher’s picture of Google now rests on a report Google can change, or leave incomplete, without notice.

Nov 3: An adviser to the EU’s top court said Google’s Gemini chatbot may infringe publishers’ rights when it retrieves articles to answer questions, if it gets around paywalls or bot barriers or reuses an article’s expression closely enough to replace it. The adviser said training AI on publicly available content is permitted. The opinion is not binding, and the court still has to rule. Courthouse News →

P.S. Google didn’t announce this spike. SEO analysts found it by comparing charts in public, and on some sites it had faded by Nov 4 with no word from Google. More and more, the clearest read on what Google’s own reports are doing comes from people outside Google sharing what they see. If you want our team to go through your Search Console and site in detail, we can set up a Google Discover Audit for you.
