In today’s issue: why traffic to the biggest U.S. news websites is in freefall as AI replaces traditional search, four stories publishers need to read, and the three Facebook posts that outperformed everything else in the last 24 hours.

  INSIDER ANALYSIS

News website traffic is down 30% from its peak, and AI is the reason

News website traffic decline chart

The numbers are in, and they confirm what the traffic dashboards have been whispering for months: AI search is not just changing how people find content. It is removing the need to visit your site at all.

The chart making the rounds this week tells a story that should concern every publisher who still depends on search traffic. Visits to the largest U.S. news websites have fallen roughly 30 percent from their 2024 peak, and the decline is accelerating. The culprit is not a single algorithm update. It is a structural shift in how people find information, driven by AI absorbing the queries that used to send readers to your site.

Here is what is actually happening under the surface:

1. Zero-click searches now account for 68 percent of all Google queries in the U.S., up from 60 percent in 2024, according to SparkToro data built on Similarweb panels. When an AI Overview appears above organic results, click-through on the top-ranking page drops by 58 percent. Nearly seven out of ten searches now end without anyone visiting a website at all.

2. The damage is not evenly distributed. Chartbeat data covering more than 2,500 news sites shows U.S. organic search traffic fell 38 percent between November 2024 and November 2025. But the breakdown by size is where the real story lives. Small publishers lost 60 percent of their search referrals. Mid-sized publishers lost 47 percent. Large publishers lost 22 percent. Scale is now a survival variable, not just a growth advantage.

3. Brand-name outlets are not immune. Forbes experienced a 50 percent year-over-year traffic decline. NBC News dropped 42 percent. HuffPost fell 42 percent. The Washington Post lost 40 percent. Business Insider cut 21 percent of staff after its organic search traffic collapsed by more than half over three years.

4. AI chatbot referrals are growing fast but cannot fill the gap. Chatbot-driven traffic to publishers jumped more than 200 percent in the same window, yet it still represents less than one percent of total referrals. The replacement pipeline exists, but it is a trickle compared to what search used to deliver.

So where does this leave page operators and independent publishers? The honest answer is that waiting for Google to reverse course is a losing bet. Google is monetizing the search page directly, embedding ads inside AI Overviews, and its incentive to send clicks downstream is shrinking quarter over quarter.

The publishers navigating this well share three traits. They own their audience through email, push notifications, and direct-return habits instead of renting it from a search engine. They produce content distinctive enough that AI cannot simply absorb and repackage it into a summary. And they measure success by revenue per visitor rather than raw pageviews, because a smaller audience that actually converts is worth more than a huge one that never comes back.

Search traffic is not returning to where it was. The only question is whether you built something people want to visit directly, or whether you were always just a stop on someone else’s road.
