In today’s issue: Instagram’s move into long-form video, what we expect Facebook and TikTok to do next, five stories moving the market, three Facebook pages for sale, and the top posts and pages of the week.

  INSIDER ANALYSIS

Instagram is chasing long videos. Facebook already pays for them.

Illustration of short vertical video clips flowing together into one widescreen video

Instagram is testing long, horizontal video inside its main app. We think it is the clearest sign yet that the biggest platforms are converging on the same mix of short and long.

01 What Instagram is testing

The new format is called Features: horizontal videos up to 90 minutes long. It ran first with creators in Brazil and has now opened to a small group in the US, and Instagram plans to expand it to tens of thousands of US creators. Features are recommended in Explore, and short clips posted as Reels can link straight back to the full video.

Two details tell you where this is heading. Instagram’s TV app, already on Fire TV, Google TV and Samsung TVs, will put Features first. And for now, Instagram is reportedly not sharing ad revenue from Features with creators, though it has left room to change that later.

Instagram has tried this before. IGTV launched in 2018 as a separate app for longer clips and was shut down in 2022. This time long video sits inside the main app, in the feed and in Explore, with Reels feeding viewers into it.

02 Why we think every platform follows

Look at the path. Podcasts became video podcasts, video podcasts made YouTube the home of long shows, and now Instagram wants a share of those viewing hours. Netflix and Disney have been adding creator podcasts and videos for the same reason. We expect TikTok and Facebook to follow with long-form pushes of their own.

Facebook is already partway there. It already promotes long-form video, and Meta says Content Monetization rewards deeper engagement, longer watch time and qualified views. Facebook also tells creators that as watch time on a Reel goes up, the payout can go up with it.

03 Where we think the money goes

The design shows how the two formats split the work. Reels are short, usually around three minutes or less, and they do the discovery. The long video is where the viewer settles in, and Instagram has said it expects much of that deep viewing to move to the big screen over time.

The open question is pay. YouTube shares 55% of ad revenue with qualified creators, and that is the benchmark every platform chasing long viewing hours gets measured against. Instagram is starting without a revenue share, which tells us the economics are still being worked out.

Our read: long-form will be valued alongside Reels across every major platform, with high monetization potential. Short clips will keep winning the first look, and long videos will hold the time that ad money follows. Facebook already pays for that time today.

THE PUBLISHER IN A BOX TAKE

Every big feed is heading to the same place: short clips that find the audience, and long videos that keep it. Instagram is building the format first and the payouts later. Facebook already rewards the watch time, and we expect TikTok to follow.

Nobody else has our scale across so many pages, partners and data points, so we see shifts like this across niches early. We share what we see here first.

Right now we’re talking with a lot of major media networks, and they keep asking for the same thing. They want bigger, steadier income, and they want it coming from more than one place. It makes sense. Things are volatile. Facebook reach swings. Google Search shifts with every update. YouTube changes what it rewards. AI search and LLMs are changing how readers find stories in the first place. At any moment, at least one of the platforms publishers earn from is having a problem. If most of...
