In today’s issue: the first controlled test of what Google’s AI Mode does to publisher traffic, and five stories from this week worth your time. |
Google’s AI Mode cut clicks to websites by more than half
The first randomized experiment on AI search is out. Here’s what it found, and what we’d do about it if you run pages and sites.
For a year, the AI search debate has been traffic charts versus Google talking points. Now there’s a controlled test.
Researchers from the University of Pennsylvania and Northeastern University used a browser extension to randomly split US Google users into three groups for a week: no AI at all, Google exactly as it is today, and every search forced into AI Mode.
Because the groups were random, the differences come from the AI itself, not from seasonality or an algorithm update. The paper was preregistered and is not yet peer reviewed.
Compared with Google as it is today, the AI Mode group:
−55%
fewer clicks to websites per person, per day. That’s 4.1 clicks down to about 1.8.
19 in 100
searches ended without a click that would have happened on normal Google.
13 in 100
fewer people clicked through to news sites. Reddit lost 21 in 100, Wikipedia 10.
11 in 100
more people drifted to Bing, DuckDuckGo, or Yahoo, and rated Google lower on trust.
The other side is just as telling. The no-AI group clicked through on about 9 more searches in every 100 than normal Google users, with no drop in satisfaction. The AI layer takes clicks without making search feel better.
One week, a younger and more educated sample, and AI Mode was forced on people when it was only about 0.6% of searches. Google also changed its page code mid-study, so only about half of AI Overviews were hidden in the no-AI group, which likely understates that gap.
AI Mode is still opt-in for most people, so today’s hit is small. The risk is the day Google makes it more prominent or the default. A site that lives on informational traffic could lose a big share of visits with rankings that don’t move at all.
That’s also why being named inside the AI answer is becoming its own channel. If you want to see where AI assistants already cite you in your niche, and where a competitor is taking that spot, our GEO Authority System maps it and gives you a 90-day plan to claim it.

What we’d do this week |
| 01 |
Split visibility from visits
Track impressions and rankings next to sessions. If impressions hold and clicks fall, the results page changed. Your SEO didn’t break.
DO THIS → Add impressions and CTR beside sessions in your weekly report.
| 02 |
Find your exposed pages
Quick-answer explainers are first in line to get summarized. Pages built on original data, opinion, tools, or a decision are much harder to replace.
DO THIS → List your top 20 search pages and tag each one answer or experience.
| 03 |
Give people a reason to click
Exclusive numbers, case studies, and a clear next step are the things a summary can’t deliver.
DO THIS → Add one original stat or a next step to your five biggest explainers.
| 04 |
Earn the citation
Being named inside an AI answer is visibility in its own right. Clean structure, credible bylines, and mentions on trusted sites all help.
DO THIS → Ask ChatGPT and Gemini your top three niche questions and note who gets named.
| 05 |
Own more of your demand
Facebook pages, Discover, syndication, and email all cut your reliance on one results page Google can redesign overnight.
DO THIS → Pick one channel beyond search and give it a real weekly target.
THE PUBLISHER IN A BOX TAKE
Search clicks are becoming a shrinking slice of the pie. The publishers who come through this run a stack, not a single channel, and they measure revenue per visit, not raw sessions.
Google Discover is the obvious place to start, because it runs on the same Google demand without needing the search click. If you want to know how much Discover traffic you’re leaving on the table, start with our Google Discover audit.

ENTERPRISE CONSULTING · THE MEDIA ENTERPRISE PROGRAM
When Google keeps the click, where does your revenue come from?
The study above is a preview. If AI answers become the default, a site can keep every ranking and still lose half its visits. We’ve watched major media brands lose 70 to 90 percent of their income when their main channel turned. They weren’t badly run. They were built on one channel.
The Media Enterprise Program is our flagship consulting engagement, and it isn’t a course. Our founders map your strategy, our team leads build it with your people, and you keep 100% of the revenue.
