Google Discover is bigger than Google Search

Google Discover vs Search

Friday insider, one topic: Google Discover. Three questions every publisher should be able to answer this year. Does your site qualify. Can you make traffic from it. Can you make money off it.

1. Does your site qualify?

Discover is not Search. It is a personalized mobile feed. Google already knows the reader. It matches content to that person, then expands reach when early engagement is strong.

What Discover rewards, in practice:

Technical: crawlable, fast on mobile, Core Web Vitals that pass.

Site quality and trust: clear identity, real authors, signals Google can trust.

Content: formats and topics that fit the feed, not just keyword pages.

The spark: an early burst of engaged readers that tells Discover a piece is worth showing.

If you already ship volume, have brand history, and run a real social audience, you often have more of the ingredients than you think. The gap is usually systems, not “write more.”

2. Can you make traffic from it?

The channel math has already moved. Industry reporting puts roughly 68% of publishers’ Google traffic on Discover, not Search. Discover’s share of Google traffic was about 67.5% in Q4 2025, up from ~37% in 2023. Search click-through is getting squeezed where AI summaries show up.

So yes — when the site is ready, Discover can be the main Google pipe. We see sites that look “strong on Search” and still sit near zero on Discover. That is not a death sentence. That is unused inventory.

3. Can you make money off it?

Discover traffic monetizes like a feed: display ads, clean mobile experience, RPM that moves with geo and niche. Sessions at Discover scale are not the same as Search Console vanity clicks. They are readers who showed up because Google thought the story fit them.

Here is the operating rule we use when we look at a publisher running both channels well:

If you have a decent Google Discover campaign and a decent Facebook operation, you should earn roughly 1:1 between the two. In practice a lot of publishers land closer to 10x from Discover versus Facebook when both are running at full tilt. One channel can outperform the other — but overall, you should be in a really good spot.

Facebook without Discover leaves money on the table. Discover without Facebook leaves distribution fragile. Both humming is the position.

What to do this week

Open Search Console → Discover. Look at clicks, impressions, and CTR for the last 3–6 months. If that report is empty or tiny while Search still moves, you have a qualification and systems problem, not a “content volume” problem. If you want a live walkthrough of where you stand — and whether turnkey or consulting is the right next step — book a strategy call with our Discover lead.
