In today’s issue: how Facebook’s recommendations now decide who sees your Reels, where brand money is heading, what to post this week, and five stories moving the market.

  INSIDER ANALYSIS

Facebook’s recommender now picks your audience. Fresh Reels get a real shot.

More of the people watching your Reels have never heard of your Page. Meta’s Oct 21 earnings call showed how far that shift has gone, and why many Pages are having record months.

01 What Meta told investors

Meta finished rolling out a new Facebook recommendation system called generative retrieval. It reads what a post is about and matches it to likely fans, so new posts can surface before they build up engagement. Meta says it now handles about half of Facebook Reels views and about a quarter of the Feed views from accounts people don’t follow. Facebook Reels time spent hit an all-time high.

02 What it means for Pages

Reach now depends on what the system chooses to recommend, more than on follower count. For Pages posting well, that is good news: a new Reel can find a fresh audience the day it goes up, as long as it is original and part of a steady rhythm.

The money is moving too. Meta says Partnership Ads, which let brands run ads with creators and businesses, grew more than 97% year over year and passed a $15 billion annual revenue run rate. That makes branded content a real revenue line for Pages with the right audience.

03 What to do this week

Post one fresh, original Reel a day, and drop anything reposted or lightly edited from other Pages. Original work gives the system something new to match.

Get ready for brand deals. Pull together a one-page summary of your reach, audience and best formats, so you can answer a brand the day it asks.

If you want the full system for growing cleanly and turning that reach into revenue, that is what our Facebook Monetization Suite builds.

THE PUBLISHER IN A BOX TAKE

Followers still matter, yet reach is now earned post by post. The system keeps choosing the Pages that keep giving it fresh, original work.

Nobody else has our scale across so many pages, partners and data points, so nobody else can spot these patterns this early. We share them here first.

Hit reply and tell us what you’d like us to cover next.

5 stories from Oct 15 to 24 that matter if you run pages and sites.

1 Oct 24: Meta pushed its new business terms back from Oct 30 to Nov 20 after publisher pushback. The European Publishers Council has now asked the EU to act before the new date, arguing that dropping the word “train” still leaves room for AI use of publisher archives. Meta terms delay →
2 Oct 23: Google is testing AI-written summaries inside the citation cards in AI Overviews, the cards that link out to your article. The text is Google’s own summary of your page for that query, so search your top topics and see how your pages are described. AI Overview cards →
3 Oct 22: Google AdSense dropped two video placement restrictions. Accompanying video no longer has to load in the page body, and sticky players no longer have to start in main content. The 50% visible and dismiss rules stay. AdSense video rules →
4 Oct 20: YouTube is testing Ask YouTube AI answers at the top of standard search results for some signed-in US desktop users searching in English. The answers include clips that show the video title and channel name. Ask YouTube test →
5 Oct 15: If your ChatGPT referrals dropped from Oct 9, it was likely a tracking bug. After GPT-6 rolled out, inline ChatGPT links lost their utm_source tag and referrer, so many visits landed in GA4 as Direct until a fix began rolling out Oct 15. Add a GA4 note for Oct 8 to 15. Right now we’re talking with a lot of major media networks, and they keep asking for the same thing. They want bigger, steadier income, and they want it coming from more than one place. It makes sense. Things are volatile. Facebook reach swings. Google Search shifts with every update. YouTube changes what it rewards. AI search and LLMs are changing how readers find stories in the first place. At any moment, at least one of the platforms publishers earn from is having a problem. If most of...
