In today’s issue: why the August 2026 core update matters more than the last three combined, Meta’s surprise move at trial, and the NewsBomb leaderboard.

Google’s August 2026 core update is live, and this one raises the bar on originality
Google began rolling out its fourth core update of the year on August 26. Early signals suggest pages that summarize what other pages already said are losing visibility, while pages carrying original data, first-hand testing, or genuine expertise are holding or gaining.

Google has now shipped four core updates in 2026: February (Discover-only), March, May, and today. The cadence keeps tightening. March to May was a 43-day gap, the shortest between back-to-back core updates since the old Penguin-era refresh cycles. This August rollout arrives less than 90 days after May finished on June 2.
The pattern across early observations is consistent. Pages that existed only to repackage information available elsewhere are dropping. Pages that carry something Google cannot find anywhere else are mostly holding. That is not a new principle, but what is new is how little middle ground remains. AI Overviews now resolve a large share of informational queries before anyone scrolls, and Google appears to be adjusting what it ranks beneath them accordingly.
This is also landing on top of the August 2026 spam update, which started rolling on August 18 and may still be completing. Publishers watching their traffic need to separate the two. A spam update improves how existing violations are detected. A core update re-weights how Google judges overall site quality across the whole index.
For Facebook publishers who also rely on search traffic, the timing is worth noting. The previous round of unconfirmed volatility in early August already rattled Discover traffic for some sites. Now a confirmed core update is layering on top. The practical move is to compare Search Console positions, impressions, and clicks separately, isolate Discover and Google News traffic from organic search, and wait for the rollout to finish before making any major content changes.
Google says the rollout may take up to two weeks to complete. Do not react to day-one movement. Measure after the rollout closes, not during it.

Google Discover is where quality publishers are seeing some of their biggest referral numbers right now.
