In today’s issue: Facebook is testing an app that opens straight into Reels, why 100% AI and stock-only pages are walking into a trap, what truly original Reels look like, and five stories moving the market. |

Facebook wants to open on Reels. Make sure they’re yours.

IN THE TEST
Reels first
Full-screen recommended Reels. Feed moves to tab two.

Facebook is pushing Reels harder than ever, and leaning harder than ever on originality to decide which Reels win. That puts AI-only Reels in a tough spot. Here’s what it means for your pages, and what we’d do this week.
|
|
Facebook has started testing an app that opens straight into full-screen recommended Reels. The classic Feed moves to a second tab. TechCrunch reported the test in India on Oct 6, and Meta confirmed it’s also running in Indonesia. Users can opt out. Meta says it will explore bringing it to the US next year.

What a Reels-first open means for your pages |
The first screen is the most valuable real estate on Facebook. In this test it goes to recommended Reels picked for the viewer, ahead of posts from pages they follow. Your followers can still find you in Feed, one tap further away. For image-post pages that live on follower reach, that cushion gets thinner. It’s still a test, but the direction is clear: last year every new Facebook video became a Reel.
Image posts still pay a lot of the bills for many pages, so this isn’t a reason to drop them overnight. But Reels are where Facebook is sending attention, and that’s where the bar on originality is rising fastest.

|
Why originality is the real filter now |
If Reels become the front door, originality decides which Reels get recommended. In its March update to the original content guidelines, Meta said content filmed or produced by a page is original. Reels using third-party clips count when a creator on screen presents something genuinely new, like fresh information or analysis.
Watching along, reacting, stitching clips, narrating what’s on screen, or adding borders, captions, and speed changes is unoriginal and likely deprioritized. Pages that keep posting mostly unoriginal content may be deemed non-recommendable and demonetized.
Meta’s help center adds the line that matters most here: unoriginal content won’t be recommended to people who don’t follow your page. That’s the whole recommended Reels surface. A violation usually means a 90-day demonetization penalty, and the policy can still apply to licensed content. Meta says views and time spent on original Reels roughly doubled in H2 2025 vs. H2 2024.
What about AI? Meta’s originality rules don’t mention AI by name. They target duplicated, templated, low-value content, and a page running nothing but AI Reels tends to look exactly like that. Meta also requires a label on photorealistic AI video and realistic AI voices, and says skipping it may bring penalties.

Why 100% AI and stock-only are a trap |
Our own testing agrees. Next week we’re releasing a major AI Reels analysis, built from tests across dozens of Facebook pages. The most consistent finding so far: pages posting 100% AI Reels are getting hurt. Full numbers next week.
The private PIB publisher community is seeing a related pattern with stock. One page lost about 60% of its reach after it started posting licensed stock photos. Traffic shifted from suggested to followers with no flags, green health scores, and an Excellent originality rating (around 99%) the whole time. Meta AI pointed to limited unique value. Suggested reach came back about 30 days after the drop began, once they stopped posting stock other pages had already run.
That’s one case, and it’s photos. But across the community there’s now evidence that relying only on AI or only on stock can both hurt your originality. A license lets you post a file. It doesn’t make the file unique. A prompt gives you a video, and thousands of pages are writing the same prompts.
Facebook cares about unique, whatever the source. AI and stock can be part of a good Reel. They just can’t be the whole Reel, every time, on every page.

What truly original Reels look like |
Original doesn’t have to mean expensive. Put something only you have at the center:
✓ Own footage. Phone-shot on location, behind the scenes, your newsroom, your kitchen, your rescue.
✓ Real people on camera. A host, an editor, a local expert presenting something new.
✓ Commentary that adds something. Context, analysis, a fact the viewer didn’t have.
✓ Local and first-hand angles. You were there, you called someone, you have the document.
✓ Licensed clips, credited and transformed. License it, credit it on screen, then add your angle.
✓ Formats built from your page’s voice. A recurring series, a signature open, a weekly question.
✓ AI behind the camera. Research, scripts, captions, edits. Keep real footage, a real person, or real reporting in front. |

What we’d do this week |
| 01 |
Audit where your Reels come from
Tag the last 30 days of Reels per page: own footage, licensed, AI, or stock.
DO THIS → Any page that’s all AI or all stock goes to the top of the fix list.
|
| 02 |
Watch suggested vs. follower reach
Revenue lags. The traffic source mix moves first. That’s how the stock case got caught.
DO THIS → Compare suggested vs. follower share on 20 to 50 recent posts against a month you know was good.
|
| 03 |
Keep images earning, check every stock file
Image posts still earn for many pages. Don’t abandon them over a test.
DO THIS → Reverse-image search any photo or clip before you buy it. If other Facebook pages show up, skip it.
|
| 04 |
Launch one original Reels series per page
Pick a format only your page can run: a host, a weekly question, a local beat.
DO THIS → Ship three Reels in that series this week, with a real person or real footage at the center.
|
| 05 |
Write your team’s AI rule
AI should speed up research, scripts, and edits. AI as the whole product is what our tests keep flagging.
DO THIS → One page: what AI can make, what must be real, and when the AI label goes on.
|
|
THE PUBLISHER IN A BOX TAKE
A Reels-first Facebook is a test today and could be the default tomorrow. When the first screen is recommended video, originality decides who gets picked. Pages running 100% AI or stock-only are betting against the exact thing Facebook keeps saying it will demote. Build Reels nobody else can post: your footage, your people, your angle. Use AI to go faster, and keep something real at the center. Our full AI Reels analysis lands next week. Credit for the stock and AI originality cases: the private PIB publisher community.
