  INSIDER ANALYSIS

X just started paying people for giving credit

Illustration of one photo card on the left whose golden light splits into two streams, with a chain link between them, each stream ending in a glowing coin.

Until this week, posting someone else's photo on X earned you nothing. Posts with duplicated images didn't count toward creator payouts at all.

That changed on Tuesday. You can now reshare someone's photo with their name attached: long press the image, tap Post photo, and it goes out on your account with a link back to whoever posted it first. Then the part that matters. Both of you get paid, because the engagement counts toward both accounts.

So the same photo can now be worth nothing or worth money, and the only difference is whether you credited the person who made it.

X has always been clear about what it wants to pay for: original reporting, analysis, your own photos and video, your own graphics and memes. Reposting other people's stuff was never supposed to be an income stream. This update doesn't change that. It opens one lane where sharing is fine, as long as the credit travels with it.

Facebook has been working on the same problem from the other end. Its March update spelled out what counts as original, and said Pages that mostly post copies get pushed down and can lose monetization. Facebook penalizes the copy. X now pays for the credit.

That's two platforms with two written definitions of "original," and they don't match. Something that's fine on one can count against you on the other.

There's plenty nobody knows yet. X hasn't said how it decides who the original poster is when a photo has already been copied ten times. There's no data on how credited reshares actually perform. And payouts only reach accounts that clear X's bar of 500 verified followers and 500,000 impressions from verified users over 90 days.

Still, this is a bigger deal than it looks. Every platform has been fighting reposted content with penalties, and none of them has found a way to reward the person who made the thing. X just did, with one tap and a link back. Once creators see two payouts on one photo, expect Facebook, Instagram and the rest to build their own version. Where a piece of content came from used to be a question of manners. It's turning into a question of money.

It makes sense. Things are volatile. Facebook reach swings. Google Search shifts with every update. YouTube changes what it rewards. AI search and LLMs are changing how readers find stories in the first place. At any moment, at least one of the platforms publishers earn from is having a problem. If most of...
