In today’s issue: why Facebook Groups are the real retention engine keeping billions coming back, what fresh Google search data tells us about Groups leaking into the open web, and why the Pages monetization playbook signals that Groups monetization tools are coming next.

Groups are Facebook’s hidden treasure and the rest of the internet is starting to notice
Ahrefs data drawn from more than 500 million search results shows public Facebook Group posts now appear in 38.3 percent of Google’s Discussions and Forums results, making Facebook the number two forum source behind only Reddit. Every Facebook URL in that module came from a Group. Not a Page. Not a profile. A Group.

Facebook carries 2.11 billion daily active users and 3.07 billion monthly active users, the largest standalone social platform on the planet. The honest answer for why that many people still open the app every single day is Groups. Someone asked a question, a thread caught fire, a neighbor posted something useful. That pull is stronger than any algorithmic feed because it feels personal. For hundreds of millions of users, Groups are not a feature inside Facebook. Groups are Facebook. They are the primary way those users interact with the platform and the main reason they keep coming back.
News consumption rides directly on top of that daily habit. A Pew Research survey from August 2025 found that 38 percent of US adults regularly get news on Facebook, ahead of every other social platform including YouTube at 35 percent. Much of that consumption happens inside Groups, where members share links, argue context, and push stories further than any Page timeline could. Groups turn passive readers into active distributors. Someone opens the app to check a Group notification, stays to scroll through news, and the loop keeps session times high and return rates sticky.
Now that retention engine is spreading beyond Facebook. The Ahrefs analysis examined more than 500 million search results and found that public Group posts appear in 38.3 percent of Google’s Discussions and Forums results in the US, trailing only Reddit at 87.8 percent and ahead of Quora at 32 percent. Facebook took the number two slot from Quora in January and has held it every month since. Every Facebook URL in that module came from a Group, not a Page, and the visibility is spread across thousands of communities rather than a handful of mega-Groups. Group content is now pulling organic search traffic from outside the Facebook ecosystem entirely.
Connect the monetization dots. Meta spent the last two years building out Pages infrastructure: Content Monetization Program, in-stream ads, performance bonuses, interoperable subscriptions. That rollout is a template, and Groups are the obvious next surface. Meta already lets some admins charge subscription fees for private Groups and has launched interoperable subscriptions that give paying fans on other platforms access to subscriber-only Groups. Expect that toolkit to expand in the coming months. Groups are where the daily habit lives, Google is rewarding that content with search placement, and Meta has every financial incentive to hand Group admins real monetization tools. Build a Group strategy alongside your Page strategy and you get two distribution engines instead of one, plus a front-row seat for whatever rolls out next.

P.S. The analysis above showed Google pulling public Group content into 38.3 percent of Discussions and Forums results. That is search engines assigning authority to community content in real time. The same dynamic is playing out inside AI engines: ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, and Gemini are already deciding which publishers to cite, and those citation slots are filling now. The GEO Authority System is a structured audit of how AI engines see your properties today, plus a 90-day plan to become the answer they give. See The GEO Authority System.
