BREAKING: Facebook starts charging for links

Something is moving inside Facebook right now.

It surfaced in our community first. One operator went to add a link to a post, the same thing she does every day, and hit a message nobody had seen before:

Two free link posts a month. After that you pay, or your URLs post as dead text. Even in comments. It is rolling out in waves. Some pages have it. Some do not. Yet.

So ask the questions out loud.

Is this the end of Facebook as we know it?

The end of Facebook traffic as we know it?

Does this change Facebook for publishers completely?

Is it the biggest opportunity ever, or the end of Facebook for publishers?

Yes. To all of it.

There are operators posting ten, twenty link shares a day right now, pulling tens of thousands a month in referral traffic. Last week that model had no meter on it. Today it does. The ones watching closely will pivot in days. The ones who find out late never will. And whoever is left standing inherits the attention the link flood leaves behind.

While the dust settles:

  • Do not panic-buy the subscription. Pricing differs account to account. Meta is still deciding.
  • Your two free links: best converters only.
  • Shift the rest to Stories, Messenger, your linksheet. Comment links are dying.
  • Run a real news operation? Register as a news publisher in Business Manager. News pages were exempt last test.

Whatever Meta does next, two things are non-negotiable: stay on top of Facebook, and diversify beyond it. One page and one traffic play is how mornings like this catch you. A real media operation feels the tremor and keeps walking. Building that is what our Media Enterprise Consulting program is for.
