The referral traffic revolution has arrived, at the same time as the Google Discover Apocalpyse

WEEK OF OCTOBER 21, 2025

THE PUBLISHER INSIDER

What you need to know this week ๐Ÿ‘‡

1. Has the Google Discover traffic apocalypse arrived? โ†’ For many, yes. First Google slapped publishers with the unhelpful Helpful Content Update, with their search traffic being wiped out. Now, hundreds of publishers are reporting that their Discover traffic got completely wiped out since August of this year. Sites that used to generate millions of sessions a month from Discover had their traffic come to a standstill overnight. The good news? The sites that produce quality content (see: not AI slop) and have the right technical fundamentals continue to produce strong traffic. For example, we work with a financial site that's generated 2.02 million clicks to the website in the last 3 months and is still going strong (just imagine the RPM's on that).

2. X is testing revolutionary in-browser link experience, Facebook to follow โ†’ From Nikita Bier, head of product at X: "We're testing a new link experience, starting on iOS -- to make it easier for your followers to engage with your post while browsing links. For creators, a common complaint is that posts with links tend to get lower reach. This is because the web browser covers the post and people forget to Like or Reply. So X doesn't get a clear signal whether the content is any good. To help get better signal, posts will now collapse to the bottom of the page so people can react while you're reading. As always, remember: the post should stand alone as great content so write a solid caption." You can bet your left testicle/ovary that Facebook will follow suit. Get your websites ready and make sure they have high RPM's.

3. Pinterest joins Google and syndication platforms by adding controls to reduce AI content in feeds, Facebook likely to follow โ†’ All the platforms are cleaning house as AI continues to mess things up for everyone (see our chart of the week below and how to stay ahead).

Chart of the week ๐Ÿ‘‡

What's happening? Oxford researchers just confirmed what we all feared: AI is creating a downward spiral that's about to ruin the internet. AI content went from ยฑ5% in 2020 to 48% by May 2025. Projections say 90%+ by next year. Why? AI articles cost a fraction of human written content, which can cost anywhere from $10 to $100 per article. But here's the real problem: When AI trains on AI-generated content, quality degrades, like taking a screenshot of a screenshot of a screenshot. Everything becomes generic and progressively worse as it trains on increasingly worse data. Today's AI slop > tomorrow's training data > worse output > becomes training data again > repeat the process over and over again until the internet implodes. This is why you're seeing all the major platforms from Google to Pinterest cleaning house.
โ€‹

What does this mean for publishers? Those who produce high-quality content that's not AI slop will increasingly have the best results, by far. Certain platforms, like Facebook, will care less than others, but the whole market will head here eventually. Don't overuse automation or AI, use it wisely (we show you how in our consulting program).

Viral post of the week ๐Ÿ‘‡

Distribute breaking news content on your Facebook Pages and watch your earnings skyrocket like nothing else!

Check out this super simple 'breaking news' format post we just shared on one of our pages.

Go ahead and steal it for yourself (just make it original).

This will go viral on almost any page you share it on.

Next: we're going to be taking this article and distributing it across dozens of pages to multiply the income generated (this is the power of running a network of pages).

It doesn't matter if your page is about dogs, leopards, test tubes or Donald Trump falling down some stairs - 99% of Facebook Pages can figure out how to share niche-relevant news content (we'll show you how).
