In today’s issue: why the data says AI has not killed Google traffic but your click numbers may tell a different story, four stories from the weekend, and the top-scoring Facebook posts since Friday.

Everyone is still on Google. So why are your clicks going down?
|
Ninety-five percent of ChatGPT users still use Google every month. That sounds reassuring until you look at what they actually do when they get there.
There is one number the publishing industry keeps passing around like a warm blanket. Similarweb tracked ChatGPT users from September 2025 through May 2026 and found that 95 percent of them still showed up in Google's audience every single month. Visits to generative AI platforms grew 70 percent year over year in that same window, and still, almost nobody quit Google for a chatbot. People just started using both. That stat gets a lot of airtime in boardrooms because it sounds like the sky is not falling. But it only tells you part of what is happening.
Audience overlap counts people. It does not count what those people actually do. A Bocconi University study tracked U.S. desktop households that got ChatGPT Search access and found a 9.4 percent drop in traditional search queries. After 20 weeks that gap widened to 17 percent. Then a separate randomized experiment routed over a thousand Chrome users into Google's own AI Mode and saw an 18.8 percentage point drop in click-through to external sites. The people are still on Google. They are just not clicking through to you the way they used to.
The category breakdown is where you find out whether this is your problem or someone else's. Bocconi reported that referrals to marketplace and entertainment sites barely moved after ChatGPT Search access. Referrals to reference and academic sites dropped more than 25 percent. News sites lost 13.4 percent of search referrals. So here is the simple version: if your content answers a factual question that an AI summary can swallow in two sentences, the click loss is already real and it is getting worse. If your content drives a transaction or entertains, you are mostly insulated for now.
What actually matters right now is splitting Google Search and Google Discover in your analytics and treating them as two completely different channels, because that is what they are. Search referrals are getting squeezed by AI Overviews and AI Mode, where the answer sits above the link and the user never scrolls down. Discover runs on a different engine entirely. It pushes content into the feed based on interest signals, not queries, so there is no AI summary sitting between the user and your link.
If your site is losing Search traffic but holding steady on Discover, it is not broken. It is doing exactly what the data says should be happening. Track both channels on their own and do not let a flat total hide a Search-side decline that needs a completely different response than whatever strategy built your traffic in the first place.

THE CONTROL ROOM
The clicks are shifting. Your operational load should not stay the same.
The analysis above shows a market that is redirecting publisher traffic in real time. Search referrals are declining while Discover holds steady. The right response demands strategic focus, not more hours doing the same repetitive work that already fills your week. The Control Room is where we build the operational infrastructure that takes that work off your hands.

SETUP BUILD
|
The founding price covers the architecture, your foundation employees, the first custom employee built with you on a call, a weekly group session, and a one-to-one. We build it with you over six weeks rather than handing you a login and wishing you luck. After this group closes the price is $10,000.
This will not fit everyone. You need at least one property already earning and enough repetitive work moving through your hands each week that handing it off would actually change your day. If you are still hunting for your first revenue, this is not the one to buy.
If you want to talk it through, reply to this email. Tell me what you publish and where your week goes. I will read it and tell you straight whether a seat makes sense for you.

P.S. Today's analysis draws a hard line between Google Search and Google Discover. One channel is under direct pressure from AI summaries. The other still pushes content into feeds based on interest signals with no summary intercepting the click. If you are running a media enterprise and want to build the full strategy around that separation across every channel and revenue line, that is what The Media Enterprise Program is designed for. Book a founders call to talk it through.
