Facebook to boost referral traffic like crazy from links thanks to X

WEEK OF OCTOBER 7, 2025
THE PUBLISHER INSIDER
What you need to know this week ๐
1. New research clearly shows Facebook is the #1 platform where Americans get their news โ Turns out (unsurprisingly) that over half of U.S. adults get their news from social media, with Facebook being the leading source of news. This perfectly aligns with what we've been telling you all year - news and breaking news is the biggest driver of engagement, clicks and revenue on this platform. Regardless of your publication's niche, you need to figure out how to integrate news into your content pipeline. Your accountant will thank you.
2. And no, Facebook is not just for boomers and people who drive pickup trucks while shooting a gun out the window โ The same research shows that people aged 18 to 49 make up 86% of the users on Facebook who engage with news content. Furthermore, they are made up of races of all kind and there's almost the equivalent amount of left-leaning and right-leaning users of the platform.
3. X is working on increasing the reach of posts with links in them โ Head of Product at X, Nikita Bier, has announced that links do not deboost posts, and that he's actually working on making links even more effective at driving referral traffic. What does that mean for you? Well, Facebook always rips off its competitors and if X is going to do something, you can sure as hell bet that Mr. Zuckerberg is going to follow suit. For those that have been complaining that referral traffic is down (even though it isn't), this may just be your saving grace.
4. Facebook introduces new A.I. Slop video feed โ One of the most effective ways to boost engagement and baseline views on a Facebook page like nothing else is to share viral videos. Before one needed to either invest into licensing viral videos or making their own (both very expensive). Now? You can make your own viral AI slop videos and get crazy engagement from them. Our pages have driven 100's of millions of video views in recent months from exactly this approach. And now - you have your own dedicated feed to do exactly this! This is yet another new avenue from which to monetize your content and earn more Content Monetization dollars than ever before.
What's happening? Facebook and YouTube are, by far, the go-to platforms for Americans to consume their news, with Facebook leading the pack. No other platforms even come close. โ
What does this mean? As we've been saying since the dawn of time, you NEED to get into the news game. I don't care if your publication is about puppies doing cartwheels, a Joe Biden fan page or a local TV news station - you need to figure out how to expand your niche and have your content go viral on a national level. Taking the above random niches as examples - there are countless animal/dog news stories everyday, if someone is into Joe Biden they are likely into left-wing political news, and if someone is into local news then they are into general news, plus, local news stories that are viral will almost always go viral on a national level. Get on it.

Viral post of the week ๐
This is clickbait done well, in tandem with referral traffic monetization done well (as long as you couldn't care less about branding and user experience):
Many publishers will have a heart attack thinking of running a post like this on their Facebook pages, and especially what the article and website looks like when they click through. But then they see the kind of revenue this post generates and they change their tune (usually).
You don't need to go this spammy and can frame your post more tastefully, but if you want to drive as much referral traffic as possible. Here's what the post looks like followed by the analysis of why it works...
โ
Why it works:
Huge headline with red/yellow background (this is a BIG one that we're going to steal for our own posts). This is the same reason why all fast food restaurants' (i.e. McDonald's) logos are red and yellow - because you notice it when you're driving fast. Same idea with scrolling through your newsfeed at the speed of light, you're more likely to stop and look at this.
A topic that applies to a wide variety of people (we all sleep, don't we?), especially seniors, which this post is targeted towards. Clearly this page understands who their demographics are. Caption is well written accordingly.
The link in the first comment leads to a bare-bones website filled to the brim with ads. The focus is on the content (including ads) and nothing else. Ad density is cranked up to maximum. Article itself is long (and clearly made by A.I.). This is Facebook monetization at it's worst, and most profitable.
Take these strategies for your own publication and do them tastefully.
